Privacy, Security and Advocacy in the Philippines

Abstract
This talk is based on ethnographic fieldwork in the Philippines, primarily in Central Visayas, following more than a year of collaboration with groups engaged in environmental human rights advocacy and activism. Through in-depth interviews and participatory methods, the research explores how a broad spectrum of actors, including community lawyers, protesters, journalists, religious leaders, and grassroots organisers, navigate information security and privacy risks in their daily lives. The presentation will discuss how context-specific threats are reflected upon and negotiated by participants. As this research is still ongoing, the purpose of this talk is to draw out these experiences through a narrative-driven discussion rather than to identify specific technical needs.
