Abstract
When communities start using a privacy tool, they often expose new applications, problems, and constraints that neither they nor the designers had anticipated. Whether you as a privacy designer are trying to help people communicate, or just looking for research topics, deploying your software and engaging with users will teach you surprising priorities (and anti-priorities) and break your initial assumptions. Drawing on examples from the history of Tor and other cryptographic systems (some widely deployed and some not), this talk will cover the importance of long-term engaged deployment for finding useful work to do in the world of cryptography.
